Cochlear Implants—General Information

Cochlear Implants—General Information

Cochlear implants are the new kids on the block. They first made their appearance in the 1970s on an experimental basis. They received FDA approval by 1984.

The first implants were single channel devices, of which, more than 1000 were implanted up to the mid 1980s.

Multi-channel implants were introduced in 1984. Continuing improvements to cochlear implants continue to be made.

The two U.S. companies currently manufacturing cochlear implants are Cochlear Corporation and Advanced Bionics Corporation.
