Duracell No. 630 HP Zinc-Air Hearing Aid Battery
The Duracell No. 630 HP 1.4 volt zinc-air hearing aid battery was
manufactured by Duracell Inc. of Bethel CT. from the 1950s through to at
least 1990.
This battery measured 0.61" dia. x 0.235" thick (1.55 x 0.6 cm) and
weighed 0.1 oz (2 grams).
Before 1977 the No. 630 batteries were mercury batteries. Then, in 1977, in order to keep toxic mercury out of the environment,
zinc-air batteries began replacing the existing mercury batteries. Mercury batteries are no longer sold today because of their
high mercury content. |

indicates the positive terminal. The "HP" presumably stands for "High
Power".
Note the four tiny air holes
(one just below the "IN", below the "+", and at 3 and 9

showing the reddish-colored tab covering the 4 tiny air holes.
A red tab sealed these air holes keeping the air
out until the battery was ready to be used. By doing this, zinc-air
batteries had a long shelf life.
You pulled the tab off when you were ready to use the battery. When
you removed the tab, the battery
started "working" and even if you didn't use it, in a few weeks it
would be
dead. |
