Zenith ZM401 Mercury Hearing Aid Battery
The Zenith ZM401 1.4 volt mercury hearing aid battery was made by the
Zenith Radio Corporation of Chicago, IL for use in their hearing aids
beginning in 1954 and through the 1960s.
The Zenith ZM401 mercury battery weighed 0.375 oz. (11 g), and measured 1⅛" high
by 7/16"
in diameter (2.9 x 1.15 cm).
Batteries of this size were known as "N" batteries. N-sized batteries were the most common size of battery used in
transistor (body) hearing aids in the 1950s and 1960s.
Mercury batteries are no longer sold today because of the mercury in them, and the consequent environmental
concerns.
