Ear Trumpets (Ear Horns)

Brass Oval Telescoping Ear Trumpet (Ear Horn)

This large brass oval-shaped telescoping domed ear trumpet has no name or manufacturer's marks on it.

Date of manufacture was probably somewhere around 1910.

The dome of this ear trumpet measures 4 15/16" (12.6 cm) high. The oval end measures 2⅞" (7.3 cm) x 1 15/16" (5.0 cm). The ear tube collapses and extends. In its fully collapsed position the overall height measures 5 7/16" (13.8 cm) while in its extended position it measures 8" (20.3 cm).

This domed ear trumpet weighed 6.1 oz. (172 g), quite heavy for its size.

One of the cool features of this large brass oval-shaped telescoping domed ear trumpet is that the ear tube swivels out for use (as shown), and then swivels over the top of the dome, thus giving it a smaller profile for storing or carrying it (see bottom picture).

The oval shape also makes fitting it in a pocket easier and less noticeable as there is less of a bulge than with round domes of a similar size.

If you wanted to, you could extend the ear tube of this large brass oval-shaped telescoping domed ear trumpet up to a practical limit of about 2¾" (7.0 cm) although I'm not sure why you might want to. It fits comfortably in your hand in its collapsed position.

The brass part of the ear tube measures 3⅛" (7.9 cm).

You can see the bottom of the "U" of the ear tube inside the grill (upper left).

The way these domed ear trumpets worked was that the dome had a parabolic shape so that the sound waves that entered the base of the dome reflected off the curved sides of the top of the dome right into the large end of the ear tube making these ear trumpets surprisingly effective.
