Tuning Fork
This tuning fork was manufactured by Jetter &
Scheerer in Germany—likely in the 1940s.
Tuning forks are designed to ring (hum) at a given test frequency.
This tuning fork vibrates at 435 Hz (A1 on the piano).
Notice the flattened (left) end. This was so it could be put against
a person's forehead when doing hearing testing.
Tuning forks have been used for a lot of years in hearing testing and
indeed are still used today for the same purpose.
Tuning forks are used to give the Rinne and Weber tests which help
determine whether a person has a conductive or
sensorineural hearing loss.
